Industry Body Fighting the MPA Issue
The MPA Fishing Coalition is an alliance of fishermen's organisations to ensure that the introduction of MPAs takes place in a way that minimises adverse consequences for fishermen.
Fishing industry organisations covering all parts of the UK as well as the Ireland, Netherlands, Belgium, France support the Coalition to ensure that the fishing industry speaks effectively to government in all aspects of site selection through to the design and implementation of management measures within sites. This includes:
- Making sure those with livelihoods at stake have the closest engagement with government in delivering protected areas policy.
- Placing responsible, evidence-based science at the centre MPA planning and management.
- Ensuring that the displacement from fishing grounds is addressed both to protect livelihoods and avoid undermining the conservation intentions of MPAs.
- Challenging the myths and misconceptions over the state and prospects for fisheries and scale of impact upon the marine environment, whilst promoting its intrinsic low impact status in contributing to food security and sustainable food production.
The Coalition operates under a fighting fund to ensure that it has the resources to undertake its work. Every penny is used to defend fishermen’s access to their grounds.
