West Coast Regional Committee

The West Coast Committee represents fishermen on the English west coast from the Solway to the Dee Estuaries.

Highly active, the Committee holds meetings across the main fishing ports along the coast throughout the year and operates and open door policy to both members and non-members in order to increase the visibility of the Federation’s work.

In recent years the work of the Committee has provided a platform for engagement with government officials from Defra, the MMO, Natural England and scientists from Cefas.

The Committee has been instrumental in pressing forward with discard reduction research in partnership with Cefas trialling gear adaptations to reduce dab and plaice by-catch, principally in the local nephrops and trawl fisheries.

The Committee is heavily engaged in the planning process for Marine Conservation Zones in the Irish Sea to ensure as far as possible that the regional industry's interests are taken into account.

It has played a central role in establishing arrangements for the West of Morecambe Fisheries Fund which will provide funding from three of the eastern Irish Sea wind farm projects to support fishing community projects of interest of the local ports.

Whitehaven fisherman, Ron Graham, chairs the Committee supported by Vice Chairman Trevor Owen from Heysham.
